“It’s fine, I mean it. I have regular therapy and take medication. I’m better today than I was last year or three years ago. I go out now, even if it is at night and only within two or three blocks. I went to the hospital to see you.”

“How did you manage that?”

“I make places my safe spaces. So once I was in the car, I was okay. And when I take Leonard on walks, I know I’m near home and can return anytime. Leonard’s the best thing to come into my life. Having him means I have to go out every day. He helps me.”

“You have a therapy pig.”

“Yep.” She grinned. “It’s crazy, I know.”

“Nothing is crazy if it helps you. Is that why you don’t sing anymore?”

“Partly. I was tired of the hamster wheel of it all. I couldn’t enjoy any success because I was always chasing the next thing. The business is fast-paced and phony. But my anxiety worsened, and my management wasn’t listening to me. So I eventually quit. Now I write songs for others, which I love doing. That’s what John was doing here when you saw him.”

She never boasted, though she could. Most of her songs went to big-name artists who reached out to Rory. Currently, she was working on a soundtrack for an upcoming movie.

“Songwriter by day. Stalker by night.” He rumbled with his mouth in her hair.

Rory snickered. “Stalking is my nighttime alter ego. And I only stalked one person.”

All words fell from her brain as Ruin lifted her legs across his and stroked her calf up to her inner thigh. Thank God she’d shaved last night. She might be a shut-in, but grooming was still high on her list, as if she could spontaneously attend the Grammy’s at any point.

“What about you, man of mystery, any secrets you want to share?”

“Don’t have any. My life is boring.”

“I don’t believe that. You couldn’t be boring if you tried.”

“You know about the MC and how I build shit.”

“Good shit,” she smiled. “You make beautiful pieces, Ruin.”

He grunted.

“Tell me more about you.”

Sitting in comfortable silence with him stroking her leg and her hand tucked nicely in his t-shirt, she was unsure if Ruin would respond.

“Reno and me had a shit life,” he started. “Shit parents, shit older brother.”

The personal details he shared in the following minutes upset Rory so much.

He’d suffered so much.

The urge to kill them all as payback was strong. Her instinct to protect Ruin came rushing out.

“Ruin,” she hiccupped, and his hand squeezed around her thigh. He still hadn’t looked at her the whole time he recounted his life.

“Then we found the club, and the rest is history.”

The things his brother did to them, the beatings, mental torment, threats, and punishments. The degradation would be enough for anyone to kill themselves, but Ruin and his twin brother had miraculously made it out the other end.

When she could no longer hold it in, her sob brought his head up, and Ruin scowled.
